Danish architects BIG have unveiled proposals for a 150-metre-high skyscraper in downtown Vancouver. The architects are working alongside a team that includes developer Westbank, consultants Dialog, Cobalt, PFS, Buro Happold and Glotman Simpson, as well as local architect James Cheng. The 49-storey residential building will have a twisted form that is set back from the adjacent motorway flyover to prevent any windows or balconies from overlooking it. Nine floors at the base of the tower will accomodate offices, shops and restaurants, which will spill out onto a series of public plazas that stretch underneath the elevated highway.

This could sound unbelievable but recently China’s Broad Corporation built a 30-story hotel prototype using prefabricated materials in 360 hours. This project could completely change the way buildings are constructed now, and what is the most interesting it could change the entire industry. This prefabricated building system works thanks to completely wired, plumbed, tiled and drywalled prefabricated sections which are dropped on top of the columns that come complete with diagonal bracing, and then another column is stuck on top. American architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill have won a competition to design a skyscraper for China with proposals that incoprorate a 30-storey-high opening window. The 358-metre-high Suzhou Center will be the sixth building the architects have designed for Chinese property developers the Greenland Group and is to be located beside Taihu Lake in Wuijang. Offices, apartments, shops and a hotel will be housed across 75 storeys behind the tower’s curved and tapered exterior.

At 870 feet tall, New York by Gehry is the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere and a singular addition to the iconic Manhattan skyline. For his first residential commission in New York City, master architect Frank Gehry has reinterpreted the design language of the classic Manhattan high-rise with undulating waves of stainless steel that reflect the changing light, transforming the appearance of the building throughout the day. Gehry’s distinctive aesthetic is carried across the interior residential and amenity spaces with custom furnishings and installations.
