The first thing you need to know about this weekend house is that is has an interesting location – right behind the client’s main residence. The owner lives in a small village called Nosice, but works in Bratislava, so a weekend commute to a remote retreat would imply more fuss than relaxation for him and the family. After taking into account all options, the architects of Bratislava-based studio Pokorny Architekti came to an agreement with their client to build the structure in this beautiful location overlooking the Javorniky Mountains. Basing the design on the owner’s vague request for a “Slovak traditional wooden house somewhere in the mountains of Central Slovakia”, the architects finished constructing the two story weekend retreat last year, in 2011, and the result is fabulous.

Sugoroku office is a marvelous concept derived by designers Daiken-met Architects based in Gifu, Japan. The framework consists of a pile of shipment containers arranged in a specific manner to make it into an office, in three levels. This is an architectural wonder sporting spaces for living area, kitchen, design studio, penthouse floor and everything that you would find inside a contemporary office. Gifu is basically an earthquake prone area, and this seems to be an excellent precautionary measure taken to contain any dramatic natural fury.

Queenscliff House was designed by Utz Sanby Architects and is located in Sydney, Australia, on the edge of a dramatic cliff, 100 meters above the ocean. the wedge-shaped building was developed with sustainability in mind, featuring sub-floor rainwater tanks, high-level louvres and ceiling fans for a good natural ventilation and masonry walls for insulation. Here is more from the architects’ description: “The block has a due north-south aspect with neighbouring buildings very close to the boundaries on the east west. Large fin walls divide the separate functions of entrance and circulation from the living areas and garden, providing privacy and structural support for the upper level bedroom wing. The main living areas of the house are designed to link the garden space with the ocean and to take advantage of the geometry of the block, which widens towards the cliff edge. Careful placement of structural walls, high-level glazing and roof form has created a generous living room with an abundance of natural light, ventilation, privacy and spectacular views“. His work consistently demonstrates that art is not an afterthought to architecture but an integral part of it, as he creates homes that offer an appropriate environment for living with art and sensitivity to the varying space and light requirements of differing art genres. Olson has been published in publications worldwide, including the New York Times, Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Art + Auction, Monocle, and Interior Design. Olson is the recipient of the 2007 Seattle AIA Medal of Honor. He is a member of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architecture and has served on the boards of a number of Northwest arts organizations and other community institutions.
