Australian architect Andrew Maynard completed the design for a modern home extension, entitled Hill House and located near Melbourne. The project sits on n artificial hill and was built for a family of five. Here is more from the architects: “Melbourne is predominantly flat. Could this be why Melbourne’s architecture is adventurous? There is no landscape to confine therefore building is free to become landscape. Hill House is a response to this possibility. Melbourne is flat. If one is to explore the possibility of cantilevering off a cliff (a desire of many architects) one is forced to manufacture that landscape. A monolithic form is unsheathed from the hill and placed atop. A celebration of the synthetic, the manufactured. A simulacrum of both an undulating landscape and the pure architectural form.

Casa Mecano was designed by Arquitectos Costa Rica and is located in Península de Osa, Costa Rica. The residence was especially developed to take in the surrounding landscape: “Casa Mecano functions as an organism that adapts to its environment. The project maximizes the use of passive design strategies through bio-climatic architecture in order to achieve the thermal comfort levels, adequate for the tropical environment.” The rooftop was projected as a sail and a manual system was designed, allowing the client to change its inclination, with the goal of controlling the direct sunlight projected inside the house. The interior design of this sustainable residence is highly modern, with a generous living and dining space acting as the core of the project. All the rooms have excellent views towards the infinity pool and the scenic vistas beyond. What do you think about this project?

This video shows a lecture by Koen Olthuis at TEDxWarwick. Koen Olthuis studied Architecture and Industrial Design at the Delft University of Technology. He is founder of the Dutch architectural firm Waterstudio.NL that specializes in floating structures to counter concerns of floods, which are both a local concern (since one-third of the Netherlands is reclaimed land) as well as a global one, due to the possible effects of climate change. In 2007, he was chosen as number 122 on TIME Magazine’s list of the most influential people in the world due to the worldwide interest in water developments. In his vision, today’s designers are an essential part of the climate change generation. New and expected climate effects, together with the pressure on space through urbanization, will push our design targets beyond the waterfront. This involves not only developing architectural concepts and typologies, but also a new sustainable way of dealing with water as well as a dynamic approach to city planning. During the lecture, Olthuis shares the idea about using water to combat global challenges.

Powerhouse Company designed Villa 1, a modern home surrounding by an impressive natural landscape in Gelderland, the Netherlands. According to the architects, “the typical Y shape of the plan is the result of the optimal configuration of the program on the ground floor towards sun and view. There are three wings: one wing for work, studying and music making (North exposure); one for cooking and eating (East-South-West exposure); and one for living and painting (South and North exposure). The central area where all wings meet is the heart of the house. It is a large space that serves as entrance hall, dining room, bar and music-room“. Vaulted ceilings, thick walls and an impressive glass facade are the boundaries for a variety of unusually-shaped indoor rooms. Enjoy the virtual tour and feel free to share your thoughts below.

Balance Associates Architects have designed the River Bank house in Big Sky, Montana. The River Bank House sits along the Gallatin River just outside Big Sky, Montana. The clients love to entertain, so the house was set up to create an open and casual atmosphere with a strong connection to the outdoors. The house is oriented toward the best view of the river while maintaining good solar orientation for taking advantage of solar heat gain in the winter and keeping out the hot summer sun. The large roof over the living room serves to shade large areas of glass in the summer, while geothermal heat pumps and high levels of insulation help keep it warm and energy efficient in the winter. In such an extreme climate the house was specifically designed to withstand both extremes of the temperature spectrum.
