This video presents an interview with Yoshiaki Nakamura who is an architect from Kyoto and an expert of Japanese sukiyaki building. He is also a cultural worker dedicated to create a blend of eastern and western architecture. Nakamura is the founder of the firm Kohseki which was established in july nineteen eighty four as a design and construction company sukiyaki-style buildings. In this film Nakamura introduces us to the idea of the japanese style architecture which is deeply influenced by buddhist philosophy zen. 


Nakamura speaks that in this architecture style the most important inspirations are taken from nature and these values should be the most precious to all man kind. He introduces his designing methods which are based on this point of view. He explains that for example his firm integrates japanese furniture style with other methods of creating furniture. We are also able to see the warehouse of the company where very precious japanese wood for building, interior furniture and decorations are stored. However, the Kohseki’s warehouse is not a the most secure place in the company area. Nakamura shows a place where his father – a prestige Kyoto wood carpenter used to work.

As a son of this well known artist Nakamura received this great familiar culture legacy. Thanks to this heritage he introduces the sukiyaki-style building and his architectural philosophy. Nakamura says that he has one secret because of which he had achieved the success. He loves what he is doing, he feels aesthetics and the quality of wood by his own senses but not by others’ people words. Along with his remarkable expertise and enthusiastic devotion, the story of Yoshiaki Nakamura and his sukiyaki-style building would continue to catch peoples’ eyes.
