Powerhouse Company designed Villa 1, a modern home surrounding by an impressive natural landscape in Gelderland, the Netherlands. According to the architects, “the typical Y shape of the plan is the result of the optimal configuration of the program on the ground floor towards sun and view. There are three wings: one wing for work, studying and music making (North exposure); one for cooking and eating (East-South-West exposure); and one for living and painting (South and North exposure). The central area where all wings meet is the heart of the house. It is a large space that serves as entrance hall, dining room, bar and music-room“. Balance Associates Architects have designed the River Bank house in Big Sky, Montana. The River Bank House sits along the Gallatin River just outside Big Sky, Montana. The clients love to entertain, so the house was set up to create an open and casual atmosphere with a strong connection to the outdoors. The house is oriented toward the best view of the river while maintaining good solar orientation for taking advantage of solar heat gain in the winter and keeping out the hot summer sun. The large roof over the living room serves to shade large areas of glass in the summer, while geothermal heat pumps and high levels of insulation help keep it warm and energy efficient in the winter. In such an extreme climate the house was specifically designed to withstand both extremes of the temperature spectrum.

This video shows an interview with Francine Houben who leads one of The Netherlands most famous architect offices, Mecanoo. The oeuvre of Francine Houben is extremely wide-ranging and includes projects such as universities, libraries, theatres, residential areas, museums and hotels. Houben combines the disciplines of architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture to form a unique solution to each situation. She has gained international acclaim for her works and has been praised for her playful and human style. Francine Houben has held important professorships in Holland and abroad, and in 2007 was a visiting professor at Harvard University. From 2002 to 2006 she was the City Architect of the Dutch city Almere. Currently Francine is working on several complex multi functional buildings, including the Wei-wu-ying center for the arts in Taiwan and the library of Birmingham. During the interview, Houben talks about architecture in general and her projects.

The timber that cloaks that building’s exterior is silver fir, which is typical of architecture in the surrounding village of Sulzberg-Thal. Behind the cladding, the fire station has a masonry-constructed ground floor and a timber-framed first floor. A large room on the ground floor houses two fire engines beside a slightly elevated radio and control room, while a classroom, an archive and an office are located on the level above.

Beach House E-03 was designed by Lima-based studio Vortice Arquitectos and is located in Palillos Beach, 72 miles south of Lima, Peru. This modern residence has a total surface of 3,186 square feet and was built on an irregularly-shaped terrain, having unobstructed sea views: “Taking advantage of the slope of the lot, the project features different materials and textures in three levels that work together as a unit, obtaining several space relations between the interior and the outside. According to the requirements of the site, the volumes are designed at different levels like platforms on the ground, emphasizing on the main volume. The central space is closed in three directions, to avoid direct solar entrance and eye contact with the neighboring lands”. The three levels of the residence accommodate five bedrooms (first level), a social area (second level) and a social area extension plus roof deck (third floor). Completed in 2011, the Vidre Negre Office Building in Cuneo, Piemonte, Italy is a contemporary structure displaying an up-to-date, dynamic architecture. Occupying 1,400 square meters on a 6.960 square meter plot, the imposing shape mirrors in the nearby water, visually doubling its size and offering the eye an interesting play of volumes. Surrounded by native species within the surrounding park, the office building designed by Damilano Studio Architects runs its two wings from east to west. Between these two wings, a central volume shelters the stairs, toilets and bars.
